COACHING

Coaching is one of the most rewarding ways to be involved with Girls on the Run. In working directly with a team of 3rd-8th grade girls, coaches teach them healthy lifestyle lessons while training them for the culminating Lollipop 5k Run.

Who is a GOTR coach?

GOTR coaches are enthusiastic, dedicated, and positive women of all different backgrounds!  Some are athletes and some are not; most have never coached before.  All are committed to empowering girls with valuable life lessons.  Coaches must have availability on weekday afternoons, twice per week over a 10 week fall or spring season.

COACHING GOALS

  • Build the girls' self-esteem and educate and inspire them to live healthy lives.
  • Create a fun and uplifting atmosphere that inspires the girls to enjoy running and the lessons from the program.
  • Get the girls to move their bodies!  Running, skipping, or leaping!
  • Achieve 80% participation rate at season culminating Lollipop 5k Run.

DETAILS AND COMMITMENT

  • Ten-week programs are offered each fall and spring.
  • Practices are twice per week and last one hour and 15 minutes each.
  • A program will consist of two to three coaches and 10 – 16 girls.
  • Commitment and consistency is critical to the success of the GOTR program.
  • Coach commitment expectations are:

    • Prior to season start:

      • Four hours of coach training (based on GOTR® curriculum).
      • Two hours to meet with co-coaches and school/program site liaison.

              • During season:

                      • Twenty hours of practice over a ten week period.
                • About four hours per week of lesson prep time and commuting.
                • About five hours for the Lollipop 5k Run.

coaches Spotlights

It is very challenging to pick just one moment that was special...I would have to say my favorite moment this season was with a girl from a group foster home. This special little girl was very nervous and withdrawn when we first began our GOTR training...but as the season went on her smile began to grow during practices. I noticed her coming out of her shell and interacting with different girls that would not normally be in her "social circle." During a practice run on the Crissy Field trails I ran behind this particular girl and two other girls from another school and listened to them talk and giggle about boys, music, television, etc. When we finished running the smile on her face (because she had been so accepted) was a sun-beam. On race day, this little girl pulled me aside and told me how nervous she was...but she ran like a champ and when she crossed the finish line her two new friends were their to give her a hug. Talk about a moment...to me that moment, her face, her smile, her unbelievable feeling of self-esteem and self validation-that is what GOTR is all about. Thank you for that moment.

My coach is great because…… She is very positive and she never lets me give up.

I think I get more from the program than the girls do. They are always so excited to see us. . I can hear the things that are being said around them in the schoolyard, and I worry about what they are being exposed to. But for the hour the girls are with us, different rules apply and everyone cheers for their teammates.

I joined Girls on the Run primarily to volunteer. But I was never a strong runner. Because of the program, I'm now running an average of 13 miles a week, and growing! I plan to run in the SF Marathon in July.

Just wanted to let you and all the team members of GIRLS ON THE RUN know what a fantastic experience this has been for our daughter and our whole family. I think it is really remarkable that these wonderful women working with our girls are all volunteers and exemplary community leaders and role models! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!

Hundreds of happy children working hard and meeting their goals. Plus a zillion volunteers! I've never seen so many volunteers, anywhere for anything. Congratulations on a great event!
